Chandu Champion: Kartik Aaryan Shines in Kabir Khan’s Sports Drama!

Chandu Champion Movie Review: We all have a soft spot for inspiring sports biopics, even if we can predict the storyline. There’s something truly uplifting about witnessing an individual conquer challenges, fulfill a lifelong ambition, and bring honor to their nation. In Kabir Khan’s latest film, Chandu Champion, we delve into the remarkable journey of Muralikant Petkar, a forgotten hero who finally receives recognition in India after decades of neglect. Kartik Aaryan portrays Muralikant Petkar, the unsung hero who brought pride to India at the 1972 German Paralympics but only received his well-deserved Padma Shri in 2018.

The tale of Chandu Champion unfolds as we learn about Murali’s humble beginnings in Maharashtra, where his dream of representing India at the Olympics and securing a gold medal drives him to join the Indian Army in the 1960s. Transitioning from wrestling to boxing under the guidance of Coach Tiger Ali (portrayed by Vijay Raaz), Murali’s journey takes a tragic turn during the 1965 India-Pakistan war in Kashmir, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down. Despite familial rejection, Murali’s resilience shines through as he redirects his focus to the Paralympics, excelling as a swimmer under Ali’s encouragement at EME Secunderabad.

The arduous path of defying the odds, battling physical limitations, and facing numerous setbacks showcases Murali’s unwavering determination to clinch the prestigious gold medal. While sports movies often adhere to a familiar formula, Chandu Champion highlights the raw talent and untapped potential of the protagonist, offering a poignant narrative of triumph over adversity.

In Chandu Champion, we see some cool cameo appearances. Shreyas Talpade and Bajendra Kala add humor, while Sonali Kulkarni plays a journalist who brings Murali’s story to light, and Rajpal Yadav portrays an attendant at the Army hospital where Murali stays for almost two years before rising as a champion.

The film features some breathtaking silhouette shots and a well-executed battle scene, possibly shot in one take or at most two.

On the flip side, as a long-time fan of Kabir Khan’s films, including Kabul Express, Bajrangi Bhaijaan, and 83, I found Chandu Champion a bit too generic to make a lasting impact. Despite Aaryan’s strong performance, the predictability of the storyline prevents the film from being truly memorable.

Nevertheless, Chandu Champion shares an essential narrative about a man who faded into obscurity, with India taking years to rediscover and honor him for his contributions to the nation. It’s a timeless story that offers inspiration to all.
